Gleanings
Bahá’u’lláh
Published in 1935, Gleanings is a compilation of 166 selections from Bahá’u’lláh’s Tablets, translated by Shoghi Effendi from writings revealed across the Baghdad, Adrianople, and ‘Akká periods (1853–1892). George Townshend assisted with English refinement between 1934–1935. Shoghi Effendi wrote that it ‘gives the friends a splendid opportunity to acquire this necessary knowledge and understanding. It gives them, in addition, that inspiration and spiritual fervor which the reading of the Holy Words can alone impart.’ The 1935 National Convention cabled: ‘BOUNDLESS GRATITUDE FOR GLEANINGS WRITINGS BAHA’U’LLAH JUST RECEIVED.’
