Written by ‘Abdu’l-Bahá in three parts between 1901 and 1908, during a period when His life was in danger. Opened and read after His passing on 28 November 1921. Translated into English by Shoghi Effendi shortly thereafter. In God Passes By, Shoghi Effendi described it as ‘His greatest legacy to posterity, the brightest emanation of His mind and the mightiest instrument forged to insure the continuity of the three ages which constitute the component parts of His Father’s Dispensation.’ He designated it ‘the Charter of the New World Order’ and ‘the Document establishing that Order, the Charter of a future world civilization.’ It is one of three foundational Charters of the Faith, alongside the Tablet of Carmel and the Tablets of the Divine Plan.

ولکنّهم یا الهی تراهم بعینک الّتی لا تنام نقضوا المیثاق و نکصوا علی الأعقاب و نکثوا العهد بکلّ بغض و شقاق و قاموا علی النّفاق

Adversities have waxed still more severe as they rose with unbearable cruelty to overpower and crush me, as they scattered far and wide their scrolls of doubt and in utter falsehood hurled their calum
تری یا الهی یبکی علیّ کلّ الأشیآء و یفرح ببلائی ذوو القربی فوعزّتک یا الهی بعض الأعدآء رثوا علی ضرّی و بلائی و بکوا بعض الحسّاد علی کربتی و غربتی و ابتلائی لأنّهم لم یروا منّی الّا کلّ مودّة و اعتنآء
Lord! Thou seest all things weeping me, and my kindred rejoicing in my woes. By Thy Glory, O my God! Even amongst mine enemies, some have lamented my troubles and my distress, and of the envious ones
ربّ انّی ادعوک بلسانی و جنانی ان لا تؤاخذهم بظلمهم واعتسافهم ونفاقهم و شقاقهم لأنّهم جهلآء بلهآء سفهآء لا یفرقون بین الخیر و الشّرّ و لا یمیّزون العدل و الانصاف عن الفحشآء و المنکر و الاعتساف یتّبعون
I call upon Thee, O Lord my God! with my tongue and with all my heart, not to requite them for their cruelty and their wrong-doings, their craft and their mischief, for they are foolish and ignoble an

ای یاران عزیز الآن من در خطری عظیمم و امید ساعتی از حیات مفقود و ناچار بتحریر این ورقه پرداختم حفظاً لأمر اللّه و صیانةً لدینه و حفظاً لکلمته و صوناً لتعالیمه این نفس مظلوم قسم بجمال قدم با نفسی ملال

و آن اعضا در محلّی اجتماع کنند و در آنچه اختلاف واقع یا مسائل مبهمه و یا مسائل غیر منصوصه مذاکره نمایند و هر چه تقرّر یابد همان مانند نصّ است و چون بیت عدل واضع قوانین غیر منصوصه از معاملاتست ناسخ آن
It is incumbent upon these members (of the Universal House of Justice) to gather in a certain place and deliberate upon all problems which have caused difference, questions that are obscure and matter

And now, one of the greatest and most fundamental principles of the Cause of God is to shun and avoid entirely the Covenant-breakers, for they will utterly destroy the Cause of God, exterminate His La

In short, according to the explicit Divine Text the least transgression shall make of this man a fallen creature, and what transgression is more grievous than attempting to destroy the Divine Edifice,

O ye beloved of the Lord! Strive with all your heart to shield the Cause of God from the onslaught of the insincere, for souls such as these cause the straight to become crooked and all benevolent eff

O my God! My Beloved, my heart’s Desire! Thou knowest, Thou seest that which hath befallen this servant of Thine, that hath humbled himself at Thy Door, and Thou knowest the sins committed against him
و تری یا الهی لم یزدهم صبری و تحمّلی و صمتی الّا ظلماً و عتوّاً و استکباراً فوعزّتک یا محبوبی طغوا و بغوا حتّی لم یدعونی آناً مستریح الفؤاد ساکن الجأش حتّی اقوم علی اعلآء کلمتک کما ینبغی بین الوری و ا

Revealed during a visit to Mount Carmel, this Tablet addresses the mountain directly and prophesies its future as the world spiritual and administrative center of the Faith. Shoghi Effendi designated it one of three foundational Charters. Its imagery of the Ark and the dwellers therein prefigures the Universal House of Justice.

Revealed in late 1871 during a period of severe hardship in ‘Akká, this Tablet takes the form of an anguished dialogue between Bahá’u’lláh and God. Questions about the sufferings of the faithful are answered with divine assurances, building to a crescendo of triumph over tribulation.

The Book of the Covenant — Bahá’u’lláh’s Will and Testament, written entirely in His own hand and unsealed on the ninth day after His ascension. It designates ‘Abdu’l-Bahá as His successor and establishes what Shoghi Effendi called the mightiest Covenant in all religious history.

Chanted aloud in the outskirts of Baghdad just weeks before the Declaration in the Garden of Riḍván, its gloomy prognostications aroused the grave apprehensions of all who heard it. Only the Arabic portion has an authorized translation; the Persian portion remains untranslated.

Revealed in Adrianople and addressed to a believer named Aḥmad, this Tablet has been invested by Bahá’u’lláh with a special potency and significance. Its central imagery draws on the metaphor of fire and water: “Be thou as a flame of fire to My enemies and a river of life eternal to My loved ones.”

The Hidden Words

Seventy-one Arabic and eighty-two Persian aphorisms revealed around 1858 while walking along the banks of the Tigris in Baghdad. Originally designated the “Hidden Book of Fáṭimih,” Shoghi Effendi described it as a marvelous collection of gem-like utterances occupying a position of unsurpassed preeminence among the ethical writings of the Faith.

A compilation of 166 selections from Bahá’u’lláh’s Tablets, spanning the Baghdad, Adrianople, and ‘Akká periods (1853–1892). George Townshend assisted with English refinement. Shoghi Effendi wrote that it gives the friends a splendid opportunity to acquire knowledge and understanding of the Faith.

The principal doctrinal work of the Faith, revealed in Baghdad within the space of two days and two nights in response to questions from the Báb’s maternal uncle. Shoghi Effendi described it as occupying a position unequalled by any work except the Kitáb-i-Aqdas — a model of Persian prose, at once original, chaste, vigorous, and remarkably lucid.

Published in 1938, this companion volume to Gleanings contains 184 prayers and meditations selected by Shoghi Effendi from Bahá’u’lláh’s devotional writings revealed across successive exiles from Baghdad to ‘Akká. Shoghi Effendi described it as a volume whose perusal would deepen the spirit of devotion and faith.

Epistle to the Son of the Wolf

The last outstanding Tablet revealed by Bahá’u’lláh, written around 1891 and addressed to Shaykh Muḥammad-Taqí of Iṣfahán. It calls upon that rapacious priest to repent, quotes the most celebrated passages from Bahá’u’lláh’s own writings, and adduces proofs establishing the validity of His Cause.
